Khmer Art for Sale:
This auction took place on 2 December, online, by the auctioneers Experantic, who are based in Barcelona, Spain. Only one of the ten Khmer artifacts was sold. They specialize in Asian and Chinese artworks and since 2019 have had at least 25+ separate auctions of Asian art including many artifacts from the Khmer Empire. With so many auctions taking place, a wealth of Khmer pieces have passed through their hands, and as usual, with very scant provenance quoted by the auction house. As for the authenticity of the artifacts, I have serious doubts about many pieces included in their sales and in this post. I believe most are modern reproductions, though the auction house is using their supposed date of creation/antiquity as a key selling point. My intention is to simply highlight Khmer art being sold overseas on the open market - trying to identify real from fake artifacts from the photos provided is extremely difficult – and sold without any interference from the authorities, and on the understanding that no Angkorian-aged art has left Cambodia legally since circa 1950.Credit By :Andy Brouwer
