Here are a few pictures of the 12-scene performance at the Chaktomuk Theatre last night of ‘Zhou Daguan in the Kingdom of Chenla,’ performed by the Princess Buppha Devi Dance School, which offered up a fictional adaptation of Chinese emissary Zhou Daguan’s travels in Khmer territory in the late 13th century. Zhou Daguan’s manuscript from 1296 provides us with a detailed account of the customs of Cambodia and the temples of Angkor from the year he spent at the court of King Indravarman III, and the historical importance of his contemporaneous writings cannot be understated. To mark the Cambodian-China People-to-People Exchange Year, the two-night show was accompanied by a pinpeat orchestra in costume, with the performers wearing a range of traditional Chinese and Khmer outfits befitting the era. The tempo was turned up when the battle reenactments brought the stage alive and traditional scenes such as the betrothal and Apsara dance were particularly well-received. With King Norodom Sihamoni attending the opening show, last night was much more relaxed with families and children filling the auditorium.Credit By :andy brouwer
