Sovannaphoum or Sovannaphumi, Khmer Inscription
Which country owns the land of Sovannaphumi? And does the newborn country deserve to cl*im ownership?
Sovannaphumi means "Golden Land" or "Land of gold"; ("") and the ancient sources have associated it with one of a variety of places throughout the Southeast Asian region.
The word Sovannaphumi was probably a glorious empire in Asia in ancient times. Based on the inscription of the King Ashoka(an Indian emperor of the Maurya Empire), which was written in 230 of the Buddhist era or 230 BE(313 BC) by confirming that he sent two missionaries to spread Buddhism arrive at Sovannaphumi.
This term has been researched by international historians for centuries, but its exact location has not yet been determined. It is also used by some countries in Southeast Asia and cl*ims to be their respective countries. Descriptions in such sources suggest that Suvarnabhumi is in South or Southeast Asia, and variants on the term describe anything from a city, to an island, to even a peninsula of gold. But the exact location has always remained a mystery, and the toponym is mired in controversy.
However, the cl*im changed somewhat when Cambodia discovered an inscription inscribed with the word Sovannaphumi, inscribed in 633 AD. The inscription reads, "Sovannaphumi is under the control of a Khmer king named Isanavarman I." The discovery was at Wat Kiri Sdech Kong, also known as Wat Boeung, Bor Seth Commune and Svay Chap Commune, Bor Seth District, Kampong Speu Province on December 22, 2017. The inscription, translated, read:
“The great King Isanavarman is full of glory and bravery. He is the King of Kings, who rules over Suvarnabhumi until the sea, which is the border, while the kings in the neighbouring states honour his order to their heads”.
Translated by Dr. Vong Sotheara of the Royal University of Phnom Penh.
Suvarnabhumi as a place ruled by a Khmer king implies that Suvarnabhumi was evidently in Cambodia, and the term could even be the name of the pre-Angkorian Chenla Kingdom.
So far, we still don't know the name of Cambodia before the Angkorian period. We have the terms such as Funan or Chenla only from Chinese records.
Many countries in the region cl*im themselves as Suvarnabhumi, but they have never had any concrete evidence to prove it, but now we have it.
Due to the vast territory of Cambodia in the past, it became the territory and parts of their country now, which is why all of them want to declare the legitimacy that they are also the owners of Sovannaphumi land too.
We believe that the word Sovannaphumi, although not an ancient Khmer name, could be also used as a metaphor for the Khmer of that time. Refers to prosperity, richness, development, rich scenery like a resort, which in the Sanskrit word is called "Sovannaphumi".
Remarkable: Khmer, we have a song that Samdech Preah Sangkhareach Chuon Nath wrote for the army to sing in the 60s. The song is titled "Khmer Land; " with the first phrase meaning "Khmer land translated as Sovannaphumi;". Meanwhile, the word Sovannaphumi is also used by Thailand to name an airport and a province.
