Preah Theat Baray Temple
Preah Theat Baray is the name of a temple located in Baray commune, Srey Santhor district, Kampong Cham province, about 1.5 km southeast of Baray commune. The temple has a rectangular shape tower with doors into the east and west, while the north and south faces are the blind doors. This temple is likely to be an old temple built in the 11th century, and Jean Boisselier apprehends that in the post-Angkorian period which was used the old materials to re-build, and extra structures including the roof. Preah Theat Baray, there are many old artifacts, especially sculptures of Brahmanical mythology, such as Vishnu reclining, Shiva Dancing, Churning of the ocean of milk, and Rāmāyana, etc.
Since the 14th century, the influence of Theravada Buddhism has been very strong in Cambodian society, and the Khmer people have considered almost all the temples before as Buddhist shrines, and some temples often mean a stupa. The temple sometimes changed the shape from the temple to a stupa, and that is why it is popular to call the temple “Preah Theat” because “Preah Theat” means “stupa” (place for placing death bone). It was then that the Khmer began to call the temple “Preah Theat”.
