In view of the violation of the fundamental rights of innocent Cambodians, the Cambodian Human Rights Committee has prepared and submitted an urgent petition to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in Geneva, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for Southeast Asia in Bangkok, independent national human rights institutions in ASEAN, and the rotating chair and representative of Malaysia to the ICRC.
In the urgent petition, the CCHR called for and made the following requests:
1. Cease all military hostilities and ensure the safety of Cambodian civilians.
2. Conduct an independent, impartial investigation and punish the crimes.
3. Provide immediate medical care and compensation to the victims and their families.
4. Strengthen preventive measures and fully implement the provisions of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement.
5. Raise the issue before the United Nations Human Rights Council or relevant special procedures.
6. Establish a United Nations fact-finding mission to assess the situation and prevent recurrence.
7. Have Thailand release and repatriate all 18 Cambodian soldiers immediately and unconditionally.
